What’s a preternatural? Wait, who exactly are the sundowners again? Muhjah? Shadow Council? Potentate? Brass Octopus? Throw in the names of the rather large cast and you may want to start taking notes.
#Quite soulless series#
Like many fantasies, this series suffers from what I like to call TMJ: Too Much Jargon. Werewolves in London (and vampires and ghosts too) might be a cliché, but the mythos behind the preternaturals (the soulless ones) is very intriguing and I like the way the supernatural creatures have been fitted into Victorian London’s social structure. Supernatural romance has kind of gotten a bad rep over here in the States, but Carriger has crafted a complex fantasy world here. Third, I love the world this series is set in. She is sassy and, yes, strong, but also unafraid to get emotional or reveal weaknesses. Alexa, despite lacking a soul, is very human and very believable. Too often, I see “Strong Female Characters” that, while I’m sure the creator meant well, make me wonder whether the creator has ever interacted with a human woman in a meaningful way before. I certainly look forward to REM’s future projects! Honestly, I would call this series a must-buy just based on the art alone. REM’s actions scenes are not quite as strong in my opinion, but they certainly aren’t a detriment either. For example, I really love how well she manages to convey human-like emotion on werewolf faces while still keeping them, you know, wolves.

Her art also works great for the more comedic aspects of the series. DId you see that cover illustration? Hot damn! Her style is both gorgeous and atmospheric, well-suited to Gail Carriger’s story. Note: I hear that this volume (which covers the third novel) is the last of the manga series because the artist REM is moving on to other covers.įirst and foremost, REM is a brilliant artist. The six novel long series it is based upon adapt well to manga the supernatural romance has a strong shoujo vibe and the set-up somewhat reminds me of Black Butler. Their EOL titles have been pretty hit or miss with me, but a definite hit is Soulless. I’m a fan of EOL manga, so I appreciate Yen Press’s efforts to publish more of it.
